What is modest fashion? Is it only for Muslim women? And why has it seen such a surge in recent years?

Over the past 5 years, there’s been a storm of upcoming social media fashionistas and creative designers, catering for the burgeoning fashion-conscious Muslim women out there.
Many of our social media timelines are probably filled with fashion related accounts for daily style inspiration, I know mine definitely is!

For me, as a girl wearing the hijab, the outfits I see around me aren’t always relatable.

Lately, hijab fashion bloggers and, in fact, the industry as a whole is now booming. Having ALWAYS been a fan of the likes of Dina Tokio, I love seeing upcoming fashion gurus bring their own unique style to the table.

I can’t be the only one to pick bits out from different bloggers and put them together, can I?
British Muslim Blogger and newbie YouTuber, Farah Firdous, is an inspiration for many of those who follow hijabi fashion!

She’s one of the closest to Dina Tokio I will ever look to for inspiration, and I’m not the easiest person to please when it comes to that!

I caught up with Farah recently and asked her all things fashion.

Describe your style in three words…

Smart, classy & sophisticated.

What makes you feel most comfortable with your hijab?

It makes me feel beautiful and different.

I admire the principles of the hijab. How the hijab covers a woman’s beauty (hair) & this allows a hijabi to express her personality more than her beauty (hair), it gives a woman a voice, freedom.

The hijab makes me feel safe and protected.

Who are you most inspired by?
I am inspired by @dalalid, I think she is beautiful in the way she carries herself and has amazing beauty/makeup tips.

She has always remained humble with her successes.

What encouraged you to be a blogger?

I’ve always loved makeup and beauty as I was growing up.

But honestly, being a blogger just happened coincidentally as I first started gaining an audience on my profile by creating different makeup looks on clients, I then later began posting a few of my fashion/makeup posts of myself and after that people wanted more!

And from then my audience has been growing since.

Why has there a rise of hijab fashion with modern society?

Social media has added a flavour into hijabi fashion.

Hijabis are making huge statements by changing the world of fashion, showcasing to us how you can be just as beautiful covered as uncovered.

Do you think that fashion in Islam can contribute in reshaping the views of Islam across the world?

Yes, for sure!

How do you feel that you influence your audience?

By empowering them with a vision.

A glance into the world of beauty, makeup and modesty combined. Influencing my followers by showing them confidence whilst being a hijabi, as some women don’t feel beautiful in one, I often get sweet messages regarding my hijab.

I’m happy to know it is helping others in breaking their insecurities and helping their struggles to keep the hijab on.

Tell us a bit about your style of dress. What is on your mind when you are trying to figure out what to wear?

Trying to dress minimal, and to not overdo it with too many colours. Also I like to make sure my clothes are not too figure-revealing, which is usually my concern.

Do you feel a lot of pressure being a Muslim blogger with a large social following?

Yes, honestly sometimes I do.

Because expectations can be much higher as a Muslim blogger as compared to being a non-Muslim blogger. I feel I will be judged more in regards to what I do and how I do it.

Last but not least, being in 2018, do you still get asked if you shower with your hijab on?!

Luckily I haven’t, but once I was asked if I was wearing a hat in 2017!??

I laughed it off, the best remedy you can give to others is brushing negativity off your shoulders and smiling back with a positive note.

We need more women like Farah Firdous to smash the fashion industry and shine a positive light onto Muslim women and the media.

With her continuous growth, Farah has proved how simple it is to become a blogger. My advice: if you feel like you can, JUST DO IT! Look at Farah, it happened by coincidence and she took that opportunity and turned it into success. What’s stopping you from doing the same?

The fashion industry is growing – and I for one am happy to see it. Muslim women, now as confident as ever, are using Instagram to showcase that you can be successful, confident and beautiful – while inspiring millions of Muslim women along the way.
